Austrian inventor Rudolf Schaubach has spent three years developing an unusual form of protection for sheep, creating a lightweight chain mail-inspired covering designed to reduce the risk of wolf attacks on livestock. The invention comes amid ongoing concerns from European farmers about growing wolf populations and the impact predators can have on rural farming communities.
Based in Villach in southern Austria, Schaubach reportedly set out to create a protective layer that could shield sheep from bites while still allowing them to move freely and graze normally. His final prototype consists of a plastic mesh fitted with sharp spikes that are intended to discourage predators from continuing an attack.
The inventor believes wolves would quickly learn that attacking a protected sheep is not worth the effort. He argues the design could provide a non-lethal way of reducing livestock losses while avoiding harm to the predators themselves.
Despite the innovative concept, the reaction from many sheep farmers has been sceptical. Critics argue the protective covering would be expensive and difficult to use across large flocks. Some have also raised concerns about animal welfare, suggesting wool could become tangled in the mesh and that wolves might simply target unprotected areas such as the legs or head.
Among those questioning the idea are commercial sheep producers and agricultural representatives who doubt whether dressing hundreds or even thousands of animals in the protective equipment would be financially viable. They say practical predator management methods may offer a more realistic solution.
Schaubach has defended his invention, arguing many critics formed opinions without seeing it in operation. He claims trial sheep were able to eat and move normally while wearing the mesh and says the concept deserves further testing before being dismissed.
For now, the chain mail sheep project remains a talking point rather than a proven solution. Whether it represents a breakthrough in livestock protection or simply an inventive curiosity will likely depend on future real-world trials.
