This weekend is National Tree Day which is set to take on a slightly different shape this year with the Whyalla City Council giving away 1000 free native shrubs.

While many tree planting events have been cancelled this year, EP residents are encouraged to still participate by planting a tree in their own backyards, getting an indoor plant, or even hugging a tree and posting a photo to social media.

National Tree Day Coordinator, Fiona Moellner says the Whyalla City Council has teamed up with Planet Ark for the 5th year running and will be giving away plants to locals on Saturday from 9am -12pm.

“So these are native plants, we have quite a list I have to say there’s a number of different varieties so we’ve got them from the Arid Lands Gardens in Port Augusta.

“It’s actually happening at the Ada Ryan- Nursey Compound which is on Cudmore Terrace, Whyalla and the giveaway is happening from 9am-12noon on Saturday 1st August.

“What we’ve done this year as well, is give away a mystery box of plants to local schools and child care centers to plant and we’ve given away about 230 plants, on top of the 1000 we have to give away on Saturday.

“We just want to encourage people to keep up their social distancing and still participate in National Tree Day, lots of people from past years have actually sent us photos of their plant's progress as they plant one each year so people are welcome to keep sending us their photos too!” Said Fiona.
