Local Tuna Industry Rides Higher International and Domestic Demand

The future appears bright for Port Lincoln’s Tuna producers with increased demand for their product confirmed.

South Australia’s bluefin tuna industry is increasing exports beyond its key market of Japan and has its focus set firmly on other parts of Asia as a growth market.

CEO of the Australian Southern Bluefin Tuna Industry Association, Brian Jefferies, said that the industry has increased its exports to Korea and China over the past 5 years and we’re hoping to achieve a higher level this year, about 5% of our total exports.

The Australian tuna industry farms about 8500 tonnes a year worth $150 million.

Around 99 percent of this production is exported overseas, however, along with a booming export market, Mr Jefferies said demand at a domestic level is also on the increase.
