The South Australian Government of Cat and Dog management are reminding Eyre Peninsula residents to consider all aspects of pet responsibility before welcoming a furry addition to the family over Christmas.
Since the new laws that took place in July this year, people need to ensure they are up to date. All south Australians that sell a cat or dog must be registered as a breeder at Dogs and Cats online.
All advertisements on any forum must have the breeder Registration number.
Dog and Cat Management Board Chair, Dr Felicity-ann Lewis said this new law is designed to weed out crooked breeders and sellers from the industry.
“Buying from a registered breeder means new owners will have a record of who bred their dog or cat,”
Dr Lewis says “All dogs and cats must be microchipped prior to being sold, and dogs and cats born after 1 July 2018 must be desexed by six months of age.”
“Potential buyers are also encouraged to verify the breeder registration number via the Dogs and Cats website and also do research on the breed,” said Dr Lewis.
Research has shown that matching pet and owner characteristics leads to greater satisfaction for owners, and a much lower rate of surrender or abandonment.
Dr Lewis said, “Do your breed research, determine a suitable size, temperament, coat type and exercise requirements, so the pet is the best fit for your home and family,”
