Locals Urged to be Wary of Tax Season Scams

As people across the region file their returns, police are warning Eyre Peninsula residents to be wary of scams this tax season.

The scams usually start with robo-calls claiming your tax file number has been used illegally and you need to speak to a representative via the phone.

Alternatively, a recorded message may claim your number has been suspended and you need to transfer money to the ATO for safekeeping.

Police say locals should not engage with these calls and just hang up, as the police, ATO and government agencies will never request payments or sensitive information via phone, text or email.

They recommend people log into their MyGov account to view official ATO information.
