An educational icon in Port Lincoln turns five this weekend.
Shakira Shark’s birthday will be celebrated at the Port Lincoln Foreshore Playspace from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm tomorrow, 23 August.
The shark was born in 2019 in response to local data from the Australian Early Development Census, which highlighted vulnerabilities in language, communication and learning.
Port Lincoln Mayor Diana Mislov will be at the birthday party.
“I’ll be reading one of the shortlisted children’s books to the children that are going to be there and the parents, Mayor Mislov said.
“Reading is so important, and it’s about family dynamic and encouraging parents to read to their children, but also children to bring books home and read to their parents – that’s how the whole learning cycle begins.”
