SA Health will support local GPs in treating algal bloom patients

South Australia’s chief public health officer has confirmed she will consult with GPs on the algal bloom crisis.

Professor Nicola Spurrier said she promised to provide specific resources and support for the industry.

This comes following a call from local doctors for more guidance and support to treat patients experiencing health issues triggered by the algae.

There has reportedly been a surge in cases of eye and ear problems, skin rashes and respiratory issues from visitors and residents walking near or swimming in the water along the state’s coastline.

The Royal Australian College of GPs had previously complained that there was little messaging from SA Health on public health advice.

Authorities are in the process of gathering data following the wild weather this week, however it might be still be a week before there is any confirmation that the winds were enough to flush out the algal bloom.
