Racing legend Makybe Diva dies aged 27

Australian racing legend Makybe Diva has died at the age of 27 after a short battle with colic.

The three‑time Melbourne Cup winner passed away at her owner’s farm in Victoria on Saturday morning.

Makybe Diva remains the only horse to have won the Melbourne Cup three times in a row, achieving the feat between 2003 and 2005, and earning more than $14.5 million in prize money during her career. She was inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame in 2006.

The champion mare is also honoured with a statue on the Port Lincoln foreshore, the hometown of her owner, Tony Santic.
