Two storm-proof moorings are being installed at Whyalla’s port to improve safety conditions and efficiency of iron ore barges.

The moorings will be located 4 km and 10 km away from the port and will provide a refuge for barges during extreme weather and ensure the smooth transportation of iron ore from the port’s harbour facilities to ocean-going vessels.

They will be a safe haven for shipping barges in all conditions – even cyclonic – whether the barge is fully loaded or not.

Executive General Manager for Iron Ore Operations Jacqui Higgins says the moorings mean barges will spend less time travelling to and from the port when weather conditions change.

Maritime Constructions – the same company that built Whyalla’s iconic loop jetty – are installing the moorings which should be completed by the end of this month.
