New Project to Explore Industrial Seaweed Production

In what could be a boost for the Eyre Peninsula’s upcoming seaweed industry, a Flinders University project will aim to both explore and develop industrial-scale seaweed production.

The project will look at the restoration of seaweed forests for aquaculture, carbon storage and maintaining a healthy marine environment.

Golden kelp and other seaweeds will be sampled along the south-eastern coastline, with the project combining genomics, artificial intelligence and experimental ecology to develop tech that can maximise the growth of key seaweed species for aquaculture.

The local aquaculture industry are taking steps into seaweed farming, with native seaweed being harvested by Port Lincoln company Dinko Tuna Farmers to create products such as fertiliser and chicken feed.
