The Australian Government is opening consultation on a paper, which looks at measures to stop importation of seafood from fisheries that use unregulated fishing practices.
Assistant Secretary of Fisheries Branch, George Day, said illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing contributes to overfishing, undermines sustainable management of fish stocks and puts both food security and regional stability at risk.
He said in assessing the case for additional market-based measures, the department will consider the views of industry, fishers, consumers and government, informing a draft report that will be released later this year.
Consultation closes June 23rd. To have your say, click here.
