Two new interactive murals honouring local World War I soldiers have been unveiled at the Port Lincoln RSL.
Unveiled on Friday by Veterans’ Affairs Minister Joe Szakacs and RSL SA CEO Tara Belton, the murals were created by Rebecca Palmer and animator Stu Nankivell.
The installations depict the story of two Minnipa soldiers who served in WWI, and the grief experienced by their mother.
Through the use of QR codes, visitors can animate the murals with movement, sound and narration to offer an immersive experience.
Port Lincoln Mayor Diana Mislov described the installation as a standout addition to the RSL.
“The way they’ve brought these murals to life is just so special and unique,” she said. “To then see the movement and the voices and the sounds really make it a real feature unique to the RSL.”
Port Lincoln RSL Sub-Branch President Gary Clough said the project offers something for everyone.
“This will give the people involved in arts an interest, people involved in history will enjoy it,” he said. “And with the new technology as well, the younger kids…it might enthuse them as well as wake them up to what the local history here is.”
The murals are now on public display at the Port Lincoln RSL.
