Day on Dorward
Sun 1 Mar 2020
Free Community picnic day on the Dorward Oval, North This summer I am sure you; like me watched the footage of bushfires burning across Australia and in particular SA feeling shocked, bewildered, emotional and helpless. Many of the West Coast crew are heavily related to the KI, Adelaide Hills and Yorke Peninsula mob and it just seems to hurt more when those close to you are suffering.
It has been absolutely fantastic the way Australians and the world have raised to the occasion, with businesses, celebrities and individuals gifting generous amounts of money. There have been some huge gala events, with big named artists banding together, getting the coverage and raking in the coin! However not all these events are available to the average, every day rural community member?
Acknowledging that ‘Music connects people’ we too are hosting a music event with a difference.
Day on Doward will be a FREE family friendly picnic event to get lots of rural people together from our wider community in the one location, a green sports oval surrounded by a traditional Aussie white picket fence; on one Sunday; the first in March. An afternoon spent together to heighten community mood with music, food and dance.
13 talented local Artist’s have donated their time to perform quick 30min sets over 8 hours! A Smith Haulage semi-trailer will stand grand at one end of the oval to house the tunes from above. A crew of knowledgeable sound technicians have collaborated to cover sound and staging. The energetic Andy Seymour will host the event!
Traffic will be welcomed and marshalled into the car park by the CFS crew dressed in their yellows, and the oval will be encircled by food, bar and coffee vendors, all donating their hard earned profits to a charity of their choice. Spread out your ‘Wandering Folk’ picnic rug, reach into your cane basket or esky for your BYO snacks, or if you are feeling lazy, support the well-prepared food and drink vendors.
Children will have the opportunity to meet Smokey, the human sized, cuddly koala that loves having his photo taken, or jump into the Red Cross tent and have a go at using the ‘Apple Slinky Machine’, creating healthy edible spirals. Fingers crossed Extreme Kites will be present to entertain both adults and children with the giant sumo suits, jumping castle, bubble soccer and more!
CFS, SES, RSPCA, Red Cross, 2 Songs and other organisations will be available to answer any questions regarding volunteering, wild life rescue and more. Cash tins will be present for those who wish to donate.
Day on Dorward Merchandise will be available to buy with proceeds going to Blaze Aid – a volunteer based organisation that works with families and individuals in rural Australia after natural disasters such as fires and floods.
Rumour has it that Streaky Bay, Tumby Bay, Cleve, Arno Bay and Port Neill and other communities are work shopping car-pooling and community buses to arrive and leave the venue safely.
SAPOL have indicated that they will most probably set up on the highway testing for alcohol and drug affected drivers.
All patrons must adhere to local licensing laws. Keeping the event safe and incident free is a high priority for the small group of organisers involved.
We will be relying on sun-smart, easy-going patrons to work together to keep this event incident free. Encouragement of good fun and discouragement of poor behaviour will be the tone of the day.
Minimum use of GLASS on the GRASS is essential.
There will be ample rubbish bins that have been kindly donated by a local contractor. Recycling bins will be maintained by the local CFS.
The North Shields Sporting Association Club house will not be available for public use, however plenty of porta-loos will be provided!
Our community has been through fire, drought and recent floods. We know the guts and determination that goes along with the re-building process and recovery. We have lost homes, livelihoods and loved ones. We have been there covered in soot, dust and dirt. We have smelt the charred vegetation for months on end; we know what it means to rebuild both physically and emotionally.
We empathise, and we are with the suffering communities all the way, sending out positive thoughts as far as we can. Showing those battling . . . that resilience wins!
We want to send out a message of encouragement, solidarity and empathy! We want to send good cheer although we are not near!
There will be determined media personnel working closely together to capture the visual and the vibe, with the intent of ensuring Day on Dorward is propelled into the live-streaming realm. Online streaming simultaneously recording and broadcasting in real time to our hopeful family, friends, neighbours and beyond through the magic of technology!
Radio stations, newspapers and TV stations from Eyre Peninsula and Kangaroo Island will be reporting and promoting this event.
After 8 hours of a safe, fun filled, good, clean live recorded music event, the SES will concierge the traffic back onto the highway to ensure we all get home safely on a Sunday night before facing the reality of the Monday morning to follow!
Day on Dorward – A FREE music event for everybody! An opportunity to do what the inspirational quotes say….live, laugh and dance together! Supporting those affected by bushfires!
