SAPOL says the early weeks of declared shopping precincts in Whyalla and Port Augusta have focused on improving community safety in key retail areas.

The precincts were introduced earlier this month, giving police additional powers to conduct searches and remove people from designated shopping areas.

Since the rollout, dozens of people have been searched, with several removed from the precincts. This includes a 40‑year‑old woman from Whyalla Norrie and a 36‑year‑old woman from Port Augusta.

A 39‑year‑old man was also reported after allegedly carrying an offensive weapon in the Port Augusta CBD, with police confirming the item was a flick knife.

Police say the additional powers are aimed at keeping communities safe and will continue to work closely with local businesses and residents as the precincts remain in place.
