A new initiative is supporting young farmers on the Lower Eyre Peninsula to build skills, confidence and connections, helping strengthen the region’s next generation of agricultural leaders.
The Lower EP Young Farmer Group, established by AIR EP and delivered by George Pedler Ag, began in September 2025 and is open to farmers aged 18 to 25. Funded through the SA Drought Resilience Adoption and Innovation Hub, the program follows the success of similar Young Farmer groups previously run in Rudall and the Far West.
Around 15 members have already taken part in crop walks, including a visit to a local farm and trial site in October. The session focused on crop rotation planning, spray scheduling, soil management and understanding trial results, while also providing opportunities to connect with peers facing similar challenges.
Throughout 2026, participants will attend three facilitated workshops designed to build confidence in agronomy, farm and crop management, decision-making, risk understanding and communication.
AIR EP Executive Officer Naomi Scholz said the initiative had been well received by both young farmers and their families, noting it provides a safe and supportive environment for participants to ask questions, learn and network with others in similar situations.
Lower EP Young Farmer Group co-ordinator Lucy Pedler said the group also delivers important social benefits, helping reduce isolation in the farming sector and supporting young farmers to build friendships, resilience and long-term professional networks.
