The cost of building the controversial desalination plant at Billy Lights Point has jumped by $140 million, bringing the total to $470 million.

Te State Government said the increase was due to ‘global inflationary pressures’ and final design changes, including tunnelling infrastructure beneath the coastline to reduce environmental impact.

The project has faced fierce community opposition since its announcement, with concerns growing over the site’s shallow bay and potential impact on marine life.

Despite this, Minister for Housing and Infrastructure Nick Champion said the government would provide additional protection to the coastline and marine environments, with the revised plans including the installation of new tunnelling beneath the shoreline.

He said the new design will reduce dredging works by 85 per cent.

Most of the region’s water currently comes from the Murray River and local groundwater sources, which are under increasing pressure.

The government said the increased project cost will not affect SA Water customers.

The desalination plant is expected to deliver water by 2026, with early works continuing on the site.
